SB Beauty Chronicles: Sun & Skin

10 Jul

Let’s talk skincare. THE single most important thing that you can do to keep your skin looking young is to protect it! You only get one epidermis and there is no fountain of youth. #truth

During summer, we are flooded with a multitude of “tanned” body images. It can be very tempting to bake in the sun for a few hours, without sunblock. Don’t do it! Trust me on this one. Unprotected sun exposure can increase lines, wrinkles, and sun spots – and let’s not forget the risk of skin cancer.

Untanned (or lightly tanned) skin is classy and elegant: case in point, Taylor Swift. Check out this article about celebrities who look better without a tan. If you really want that deep summer tan, please just go for a spray tan or try an at home system.

Now for the important part, sunblock. My favorite brand is Coola. It is a mineral formula that doesn’t contain parabens, sulfates, or phthalates. They have an amazing matte tint line, which keeps you looking cool and smooth (not oily and greasy). It is made for the face, but I use it on my entire body. You’ll love it it. You can find it at Nordstrom here or Sephora here.

Your gorgeous skin deserves flattering swimwear. I particularly like bright colors, to provide a good contrast. This pink suit pops on anyone. Even if you aren’t used to wearing super bright colors…give it a try for a swim suit. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Just remember: Don’t shush the SPF. Protect you skin and you’ll look amazing for many years to come.

{We photographed this series at one of the most amazing spots on Maui. During special times of the year at Baldwin Beach, the sun shines directly through the hills and creates one of the best spots for watching the sunset, EVER. We happened to be there for this exact moment. Incredible. These were truly some of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever experienced. So, I wanted to share them with you. Hope you enjoy!}

Summertime Sunshine

8 Aug

I’m feeling bright and colorful!  Maybe it because I just got back from the Wanderlust Yoga Festival in Lake Tahoe?  Or because I was in Chicago during Lollapalooza’s set up?  Since Austin City Limits Music Festival is around the corner?  Or maybe it’s the influence of summertime sunshine?  Regardless, bring on the color (and floral headbands)!

Adding fun pops of color into your wardrobe helps to keep B&W staples looking fresh and adds versatility.  My latest obsession has been this neon orange kimono from H&M.  You can throw it on with shorts, jeans, leggings, skirts, dresses, and even bathing suits (Confession: I may just have bought it in every color available – I mean, why not?). It is possibly one of the most versatile pieces ever.

Speaking of bright – how fun are these leggings?!  For this look, I paired them with a cool pair of neutral summer wedges.  They are also easily incorporated into your Fall/ Winter wardrobe with closed toe booties or boots!

How about this purse?  Have you ever seen anything more perfect?  It’s the ultimate accessory for any outfit – part clutch, part bracelet – so comfy to carry too.

I’m pretty certain that any summertime sunshine look should be topped off with an oh-so-popular floral headband/crown.  I originally purchased this one for the Wanderlust Yoga Festival, but quickly incorporated it into my accessory arsenal.  You know you need one too.

Don’t be afraid to get colorful and have fun!
