Today Aleks and I are celebrating our 9 year wedding anniversary! It’s hard to believe that so much time has passed. And at the same time, it feels like we’ve been together for a lifetime.
In honor of our special occasion, I’m sharing 9 tips for a happy marriage:
Do Something Special Everyday
This one comes with specific requirements: it must be something important to the other person (not you). It can be something small or big. But, most days it is the little things – breakfast in bed, washing the car, emptying the dishwasher, bringing home flowers, picking up dinner, taking out the dog, etc.
Be your own person. Be confident with or without your significant other. When you go to a party, don’t always be the couple that can’t leave each other’s side. Spend time with your friends. Individuality is important not only for a successful marriage, but a happy you. They are symbiotic. A happy independent you = a happy relationship.
Go on walks together. Aleks and I go on nightly walks with our dog Duke. Even if it’s just for 30 minutes. You’ve probably seen this nearly every evening on Insta stories @stylebeacon 🙂 It is a great time to catch up, debrief on the day, talk about what’s going on in your life, and spend some quality time together.
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
This one is always much easier said than done. Life is going to throw all kinds of challenges your way. Save your energy for the times when you really need it.
Just kidding! The Deacon that married us, recommended this. LOL. We’ve always thought this one was pretty funny. Maybe he’s onto something…
Find things that make you laugh together. Whether it’s watching a funny show, an activity that excites you, sending playful text messages, or just joking around. Whatever it is – laugh together. It’s good for the soul.
We all need R&R sometimes – an escape from our daily stressors and careers. Make sure you carve out some time to take a trip together, every year. Your mind, body, and relationship will thank you!
For everything. The world, our leaders, strangers, friends, family, and your relationship. Amen.
Wishing you lots of love and happiness. – XOXO
